They raided our treasury, stripped our schools and handed it all to their corporate cronies.

TX U.S. House Members Join Senators in GOP Hall of Hypocritical Shame

by: Libby Shaw

Wed Feb 17, 2010 at 22:32:15 PM CST

Republican lawmakers seem to suffer from a serious case of bi-polar disorder. The Party of No (because they vote NO on every bill in the U.S. Congress that would throw a life line to we the little people) suddenly say YES when major $$$$$$$$$ federal bucks will flow to their districts.

Bringing big bucks to Republican districts pleases both voters and the politician's fat cat donors. Republican lawmakers somehow believe they can vote NO in Washington but take credit for  YES results that come from the evil doing Democrats in the U.S. Congress.

I guess Republican lawmakers assume their constituents are both stupid and uninformed.

We have a fresh load of Republican award winning hypocrites who join Senators Hutchison and Cornyn in the GOP Hall of Hypocritical Shame.

All voted against the recovery act but all behave as if they personally delivered stimulus money to their home districts.

Stimulating Hypocrisy:

• Representative Pete Sessions (TX-32) - Representative Pete Sessions showed his hypocrisy after asking the Obama Administration for three billion in funds for NASA from the economic recovery act, which he voted against. Members of the Texas delegation signed the letter, including two Republican Senators and 19 House Republicans who all voted against the recovery act in February. [Texas delegation wants stimulus money for NASA, Houston Chronicle, 10/5/09]

• Representative Michael McCaul (TX-10) - "I didn't support final passage but at the same time I wanted to make sure if we are spending that kind of money that much of that gets directed to Texas." [KVUE News; 2/22/09]

• Representative Michael McCaul showed his hypocrisy after asking the Obama Administration for three billion in funds for NASA from the economic recovery act, which he voted against. Members of the Texas delegation signed the letter, including two Republican Senators and 19 House Republicans who all voted against the recovery act in February. Vote, Baby, Vote.  Polls opened yesterday.  Get rid of all of the above that are on the ballot.

The above Republicans you identified did indeed ask for available funds.  However, their no-vote resulted from the bill being rushed through without much review.  Here's a terrific wiki-article explaining why MANY economists feared the results of the bill, and why we're facing many economic problems 12 months later -- in terms of national debt, global credit defects, and continued monumental spending.

Simply put, giving out almost a trillion dollars should be trivial process.  But in fact, it turned out that way.

Concerned about the deficit? (0.00 / 0)
Since when?

I seem to recall that  Dick Cheney said deficits do not matter.

I also somehow recall, under the W./Cheney Administration, the US Congress was AOK with throwing 2 wars and tax cuts for the wealthy on our, our kid's and grand kid's credit card.

So, now Republican lawmakers who have sold us, our kids and our grand kid's souls to the deficit devil are having second thoughts?

Please do explain.

While you would blame the craters on the moon the fault of the W administration, the current financial crisis (as many call it) is being further exacerbated exponentially by the Obama administration.  One only has to look at the incredible deficit that's blooming, Stimulus moneys that even Democrats have said didn't create the jobs anticipated, and the further spending on programs that are not vetted.

I think you should actually look at what's going on NOW, rather than use historical maneuvering.

It is not historical maneuvering (0.00 / 0)
it is called the facts.  By putting two wars, tax cuts for the rich and the Medicare drug benefit w/o paying for any of the above exploded the deficit.  Period. The problem I am having is one of hypocrisy.  Republicans cannot rack up deficits while claiming they don't matter and then reverse themselves on their own records when another administration does the same. Former U.S. Treasury economist Bruce Bartlett wrote as much in an article posted on Forbes.com.

It astonishes me that a party enacting anything like the drug benefit would have the chutzpah to view itself as fiscally responsible in any sense of the term. As far as I am concerned, any Republican who voted for the Medicare drug benefit has no right to criticize anything the Democrats have done in terms of adding to the national debt. Space prohibits listing all their names, but the final Senate vote can be found here and the House vote here.

The very notion that the GOP considers itself a party of fiscal responsibility is laughable at best. Just read the article above to appreciate the GOP's appalling track record.  Today, it is the Democrats in Congress who are finding ways to pay for the bills it passes who know a thing or two about fiscal responsibility.

I think more than a handful of economists would have a problem with your statement that the President is  exponentially exacerbating the financial crisis.  Paul Krugman, Larry Summers and Paul Volcker would disagree. So would Bruce Bartlett.  Your charge sounds as if it was lifted from the Karl Rove/Frank Luntz handbook on how to lie and get away with it.

President Obama is doing what both conservative and liberal economists suggest.  We have to spend our way out of this recession.  Were it not for the stimulus spending the economy would be in far worse and dire straits.  Anyone who has stayed on top of this issue knows it.  All governors know this, too, even those in red states like Perry, who rail against stimulus spending but manage to show up first in line when the money trucks roll in.

Of course spending cannot continue endlessly and it will have to be reigned in. The deficit will have to be brought down.  But please do not expect me to give much credibility to any thoughts or opinions coming for the ranks of the hypocrites. I'll be reading up on solutions offered by credible economists and not those of the witchcraft and voodoo variety. Like the ones on the Rove/Luntz payroll.
